Graduate Arts and Sciences Exceptional Grading Petition - Spring 2021

The Exceptional Pass/Exceptional No Pass petition form will become available on April 6, 2021. Students are strongly encourage to discuss their decisions regarding EP/EN grading with their advisors. This grading method is not meant to be utilized as an immediate selection, but rather for extenuating circumstances that may impact academics. It is recommended that students wait until after midterms to determine if this is an appropriate course of action. Once a student submits a form to change a course grading method to EP/EN it cannot be undone. Please be sure of your decision!

The deadline for students to opt into EP/EN grading is the last day of classes, May 5, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). This is a firm deadline for which no exceptions will be granted.

If this grading option is selected by the student, a grade earned of B- and above will receive an "EP", exceptional pass, notation on the transcript. Any grade earned below B- will be designated by the "EN" grade, meaning exceptional circumstances, no credit earned. This grading will appear on the transcript for the spring 2021 semester.

Please note the following regarding EPN grading:

·        Once the EP/EN option is chosen, the student cannot then ask to switch back to a letter grade. So, if a student ends up scoring an "A", they will only see an "EP" on the transcript and cannot later be restored.

 ·      Your course instructors will not know whether a student is taking a course pass/fail or for a letter grade.  Faculty will submit normal letter grades which are then converted to EP/EN by the registrar's office.

      ·     Tufts combined degree students (e.g., BS/MS; BA/MA) students who wish to double count/transfer in undergraduate courses for graduate credit will only have courses considered if an EP grade is earned with a letter grade of B- or higher. All course double counting/transfers are at the discretion of the program faculty approval.
